Despite the occasional blood clot she coughed up, Nicole Kidman was certainly hotter than any of the ladies pictured above.

They were performers at Moulin Rouge, the cabaret in Paris. When this photo was snapped in 1924, Moulin Rouge was in the middle of its Mistinguett era, when the cabaret was hot and the Hoffmann Girls captivated crowds with their fencing routines and aerial acrobatics.

The photo above: that's life. Moulin Rouge!, the musical: that's art. Or dreck, depending on your opinion of the movie. I happened to like it a lot. The first time I saw it I was struck by the staging and songs; shit, man, how can you go wrong with Nirvana? The second time I was hit between the eyes by the plot: writer falls for a beauty who can never be with him. Guess the point of view depends on the company you're keeping.

That's life.

Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste
It all revolves around you.
